According to the mayor of New Orleans, the death toll may end up being in the thousands.

Initially after the hurricane struck I was shocked at the number of people who had stayed behind in their homes there. Once I got an idea of how many people not only stayed in the city but avoided taking shelter there was no doubt in my mind that the death toll would be much higher than that of Camille in '69. I just hope that the mayor is wrong in his assumption.
