In this article in the Birmingham News, Mary Lowery, a resident of Dauphin Island in Mobile, Alabama navigated the road to the island on foot to assess the damage to her home there. All she found was a gap in the sand.Lowery's house was built in 1958 and has survived every hurricane to hit the island, including 1979's Frederic, the benchmark by which Dauphin Island storms are measured.
