In this article in the Birmingham News, Mary Lowery, a resident of Dauphin Island in Mobile, Alabama navigated the road to the island on foot to assess the damage to her home there. All she found was a gap in the sand.
Lowery's house was built in 1958 and has survived every hurricane to hit the island, including 1979's Frederic, the benchmark by which Dauphin Island storms are measured. "I'd say this is twice as bad as Frederic. I just couldn't believe it," she said.
