Politics as Eulogy

Yesterday America watched as family, friends, and supporters joined to remember the life of Coretta Scott King; wife of civil rights icon Martin Luther King Jr. and a civil rights leader in her own right. For those who tuned in to the live television broadcast or were present at the funeral their memories will forever be emblazoned not with the memory of Coretta Scott King and her legacy but by the abhorrent display of politics as eulogy from the Democrats:

Civil-rights leader the Rev. Joseph Lowery and former President Jimmy Carter cited Mrs. King's legacy as a leader in her own right and advocate of nonviolence as they launched barbs over the Iraq war, government social policies and Bush's domestic eavesdropping program.

Lowery, former head of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, which King helped found in 1957, gave a playful reading of a poem in eulogy of Mrs. King.

"She extended Martin's message against poverty, racism and war / She deplored the terror inflicted by our smart bombs on missions way afar," he said.

"We know now there were no weapons of mass destruction over there / But Coretta knew and we knew that there are weapons of misdirection right down here / Millions without health insurance. Poverty abounds. For war billions more but no more for the poor."

With Washington debating the legality of Bush's domestic eavesdropping on Americans suspected of al Qaeda ties, (Jimmy) Carter also drew applause with pointed comments on federal efforts to spy on the Kings.

"It was difficult for them personally with the civil liberties of both husband and wife violated, and they became the targets of secret government wiretapping and other surveillance," he said.

It was a disgusting display and proves that nothing is sacred to the Democratic party. Any public forum, including the funeral of a legendary civil rights leader, is fair game for attacks against the administration and conservatives in general. In the past six years we've seen many horrible displays of criticism from the Democrats but this firmly stands above all of them as the most sickening. Rather than displaying some unity and showing solidarity the Democrats seize the moment and prove their stupidity to the American public once again. How can this group, who doesn't have the dignity to show some respect for the dead, lead America forward? They offer no solutions for today's problems and instead focus on smearing the President and his supporters at literally every turn. Carter and Lowry should be ashamed for their ignorant display of partisanship.

Sounds good. We'll have to be sure to trademark that phrase so we can sue anyone who tries to use it without our permission as well. :)

And you don't think that's EXACTLY what she would have wanted? She was saying the same things while she was alive, dumbass. Of course she would want it said at her funeral. She was a CIVIL RIGHTS leader. I'm surprised they even let the enemy (Republicans) in the door.

Ladies and gentlemen reading my blog you need look no further than the comment above to see the hypocrisy of the left. What happened to your precious "tolerance," Brad? The "enemy." lol What a loon.

And no, like any sane person, I highly doubt she would have wanted her own funeral to turn into a political circus.

That's fine. After all, Coretta Scott King was famous just for being married to MLK, not for anything outstanding on her own accord. In my view, this is the perfect analogy for her funeral being remembered for the causes with which she believed and chastising those who stand in her (husband's) dream.

And why are you so upset about this? After all, those in attendance gave the former presidents and Mr. Lowery a standing ovation with cheering adulation. Sounds to me like your boy Bush got blasted and your taking your frustration out on the Democrats.

Nothing is sacred for either party... both sides are full of clowns.

If this was supposed to be cynical then you apparently didn't read my blog entry and just decided to jump to conclusions about my thoughts...which is typical from leftists such as yourself.

See that's the problem with you all (liberals). You think that just because she was a civil rights leader that her ideas and the ideas of Dr. King fit into your leftist mold when in reality you have no idea about their principles behind their philosophy.

And why are you so upset about this? After all, those in attendance gave the former presidents and Mr. Lowery a standing ovation with cheering adulation. Sounds to me like your boy Bush got blasted and your taking your frustration out on the Democrats.

The sad truth is that Bush has failed to reach out to the black community. The Dems have convinced them that Republicans are evil and racist hence the standing ovation and applause from the mostly black crowd in attendance. Bush went out of his way to show his support and had to sit there and take criticism to his face at a funeral. If you can't see the wrong in that then perhaps you should seek psychological help.

Canadian Vegetable, I agree to a certain extent. I think that both parties have their good and bad seeds. The Dems just happen to have a lot more of them in my opinion.

>The sad truth is that Bush has failed to reach out to the black community.

There is no truth to this statement.

And why shouldn't Dems use a funeral as a political showcase? Politics is their religion. Abortion is their sacrament. Man is their God.

Barry, thanks for your comment. I think you may have taken my comment there out of context. While I think Bush has made an effort to reach out to the black community I don't think he's been able to effectively reach out to them because of the Democrats. The Dems response to Bush's handling of Katrina forever scarred the relationship between the Bush administration and the black community. It is unfair but that is life in politics unfortunately.
